LIGHT OF DAY WINTERFEST Goes Retro for Concert Events in Asbury Park

Retro pop, rock, and soul vibes will permeate a pair of the most highly anticipated annual events at LIGHT OF DAY WINTERFEST 2019, the 10-day festival (Jan. 11-21, 2019), presented by the Asbury Park Press, entering its 19th year of raising money and awareness through the awesome power of music in order to defeat Parkinson's Disease and the Parkinsonisms, ALS and PSP, in our lifetime.

The House of Independents, 572 Cookman Ave., in Asbury Park, will keep the retro vibe buzzing by hosting the Light of Day Winterfest 2019 Badlands Kickoff, Thursday, Jan. 17, featuring Remember Jones, the one-of-a-kind throwback soul/pop singer, storyteller and bandleader, with Marc Ribler's Red, White & Brit Tribute to The Who. They'll be joined by Williams Honor and Johnny Piasano's Rock 'n Roll Pizzeria. Doors 7 p.m. Tickets $22.50 advance; $28 day of show, and available at www.houseofindependents.com. Collaboratively supported by a large ensemble of musicians (featuring female backing vocalists, a horn section, and a six-piece rhythm section), Remember Jones and his band have played to countless packed and sold-out ballrooms, clubs and theaters throughout the country. Remember Jones was named one of Paste Magazine and Daytrotter's Top 10 R&B/Soul Artists of 2017. Mark Ribler's Red, White & Brit Tribute to The Who features The Very Best Of The Who in all its rock 'n' roll glory, from the early hits ("My Generation," "I Can't Explain," "I Can See For Miles") through the Classic Albums Tommy, Who's Next, Quadrophenia, Who Are You and beyond....as performed by Ribler and his band Andy Burton, Jack Daly, Rich Mercurio (all from Little Steven's Disciples of Soul) and vocalist Dale Toth.

The following night, quintessential '60s "surf band" The Ventures and The Weeklings, America's most unique tribute to the music and "muse" of The Beatles, as well as surf, spy and western instrumental power trio Black Flamingoes top the bill at the annual Asbury Angels Induction show to launch a five-day weekend in Asbury Park. The Asbury Angels Induction show - which honors and memorializes the lives and history of members of the Asbury Park musical community, "including but not limited to, musicians, tech support persons, DJs, journalists, club owners, record company personnel, managers and promoters" - will be held Friday, Jan. 18 at the Legendary Stone Pony, 913 Ocean Ave., in Asbury Park to kick off the final weekend of the charity festival's 19th edition. One of the most anticipated events at LOD WinterFest, the Asbury Angels show is a four-hour marathon featuring more than a half dozen acts, on alternating electric and acoustic stages, celebrating the newest honorees, whose identities will be announced that evening. Doors open 7 p.m. Tickets $28 advance/$33 day of show at www.stoneponyonline.com, Ticketmaster, and at (732) 502-0600.

The Ventures are the most successful instrumental combo in rock and roll history. They also rank among its most prolific bands. They are best remembered for a pair of Sixties smashes, "Walk - Don't Run" and "Hawaii Five-O." Yet their most impressive feat was charting 37 albums from 1960 to 1972. The Ventures' "big guitar sound" made them an instrumental institution in the Sixties, and they have remained an in-demand working unit down the decades. Guitar Player magazine called them "the quintessential guitar combo of the pre-Beatles era, [who] influenced not only styles, but also a generation's choice of instruments." The Weeklings are America's most unique celebration of the music and muse of The Beatles, performing explosive renditions of Beatles classics, uniquely arranged Beatles nuggets such as "Paperback Writer", "Baby You're a Rich Man" and "I Am the Walrus" plus brilliant Beatles-inspired power-pop originals, like their newest, "In the Moment" and "Running Away". The Weeklings bring The Beatles to life through their extraordinary musicianship, exceptional vocals and charming stage presence. Comprised of Jersey Shore veterans Glen Burtnik aka "Lefty Weekling" (bass and vocals), Bob Burger aka "Zeek Weekling" (rhythm guitar and vocals), John Merjave aka "Rocky Weekling" (lead guitar and vocals), and Joe Bellia aka "Smokestack Weekling" (drums and vocals), the Weeklings are currently, for the third year in a row, in the running to be voted The Coolest Song in the World on Little Steven's Underground Garage, this time for their song "In the Moment." "They show their audiences both what The Beatles were, and what they might have been if they were performing today." Black Flamingos formed in the summer of 2014, when Vincent Minervino(drums) conceived the band name, and invited mutual friends Robbie Butkowski (guitar) and Declan O'Connell (bass) to a mid-week rehearsal. Word spread quickly of this new power trio making waves on the east coast - combining elements of instro surf, spy & western. In its first 2 years, Black Flamingos headlined the Asbury Park Surf Music Festival and The Race of Gentlemen, and supported 'King of the Surf Guitar' Dick Dale, Agent Orange, Messer Chups & Daikaiju.

Full lineups also have been announced for Cover Me: Best of the Jersey Bar Bands (Sun., Jan. 13 at the Stone Pony); Sandy Mack's Wonder Jam, (Thu., Jan. 17 at the Wonder Bar); Friday Night Live (Fri., Jan. 18 at House of Independents); Asbury Blues and the Full Tilt Boogie Bash (both being held Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Wonder Bar), Kid's Rock (Sun., Jan. 20 at the Stone Pony); Musicians on a Mission (Sun., Jan. 20 at the Saint); and Songwriters by the Sea Boardwalk Crawl #2 (Sun., Jan. 20 at Langosta Lounge).
