Carlos Miguel Prieto Leads NYO Of Great Britain; Returns To Carnegie Hall In Summer 2019

Carlos Miguel Prieto, Musical America's 2019 Conductor of the Year, will return to the United Kingdom for the second time this season to conduct the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain's (NYOGB) spring concert tour, in April 2019. Prieto will lead three performances - in London, Liverpool, and Birmingham - of a program dedicated to works by Mexican and American composers. These performances mark Prieto's first return appearance with the NYOGB, following his debut with the Orchestra in April 2017.

Recognized for his championing of music by composers from across the Americas, especially those from Latin American and Mexico, Prieto will conduct works by Silvestre Revueltas, Carlos Chávez, George Gershwin, and Aaron Copland. Titled Voices of the Americas, the concert celebrates the power of music to build bridges between cultures and across borders. The program begins with Silvestre Revueltas' Sensemayá and Carlos Chávez's iconic Sinfonía india, based on Mexican folk themes. Chávez enjoyed a rewarding artistic friendship with his contemporary across the border, Aaron Copland, whose Symphony No. 3 concludes the concert following Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F with soloist Xiayin Wang.

Prieto leads the NYOGB's spring tour beginning on April 12 at the Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall in London (April 12), Liverpool Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool (April 13), and Symphony Hall in Birmingham (April 14). Prieto made his London conducting debut with the NYOGB in April 2017, leading the orchestra in works by Shostakovich and Revueltas at the Barbican Centre.

Prieto's commitment to working with younger orchestras is also reflected in his work as Music Director of the Orchestra of the Americas since 2011. The Orchestra of the Americas brings together young musicians from South America and North America to perform in summer concert tours. Following their acclaimed European tour in summer 2018, Prieto will lead the Orchestra of the Americas through his native Mexico in summer 2019. Also this summer, Prieto will once again lead Carnegie Hall's NYO2, a training orchestra made up of musicians aged 14 - 17 from across the United States. NYO2, which is part of Carnegie Hall's National Youth Orchestra project, includes performances at at Miami's New World Center and Carnegie Hall in July 2019.

ABOUT CARLOS MIGUEL PRIETO

Carlos Miguel Prieto's charismatic conducting and dynamic, expressive interpretations have led to major engagements and popular acclaim throughout North America, Europe and internationally. In October 2018, Prieto was named Musical America's 2019 Conductor of the Year.

The 2018/2019 season marks his thirteenth season as Music Director of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO), where he has been a part of the cultural revitalization of New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. In February 2018, Prieto led the LPO in its Carnegie Hall debut in a concert celebrating the 80th birthday of composer Philip Glass.

A graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Business School, Prieto is a highly influential cultural leader as well as the leading Mexican conductor of his generation. Prieto has been the Music Director of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de México (OSN), the country's most important orchestra, since 2007. In 2008, he was appointed Music Director of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería, a hand-picked orchestra which performs a two-month long series of summer programs in Mexico City. Having conducted over 100 world premieres of works by Mexican and American composers, Prieto is renowned for championing and commissioning the music of Latin American composers. In November 2016, he led the OSN on a critically-acclaimed nine-concert tour of Germany and Austria performing the works of Mexican and Latin American composers in halls such as the Wiener Musikverein.

In the 2017-2018 season, Maestro Prieto made debuts with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic and returned to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, RTE National Symphony Orchestra, Beijing Symphony, The Hallé, Frankfurt Radio Symphony and the Royal Scottish National Symphony, among others. He began 2018 conducting the LPO, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, and an all-Ginastera program with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra. In Spring 2018, Prieto returned to Spain to conduct the RTVE Symphony Orchestra, Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa, Orquesta de Valencia and Orquesta del Principado de Asturias.

Maestro Prieto began the 2018-2019 season conducting the BBC National Orchestra of Wales following by concerts with the National Symphony Orchestra in November and the Detroit Symphony in December. In the Spring 2019, Prieto will make return appearances with The Hallé, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, and the Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa.

Prieto's recent recordings include works by Bruch, Beethoven and Mendelssohn, with violinist Philippe Quint and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería on Avanticlassic, and Korngold's Violin Concerto on Naxos, which received two Grammy nominations. In Spring 2013, Prieto released a 12-DVD set of live recordings of the complete symphonies of Mahler as part of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería's 35th Anniversary season.

A passionate proponent of music education, Prieto served as Principal Conductor of the Orchestra of the Americas from its inception until 2011 when he was appointed Music Director. In early 2010 he conducted the ensemble alongside Valery Gergiev on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the World Economic Forum at Carnegie Hall. In the Summer 2018, Prieto led the Orchestra of the Americas on its 2018 European tour with concerts from Lviv, Ukraine to Edinburgh, Scotland. Prieto was also tapped by Carnegie Hall to lead its NYO2 initiative, which featured concerts at Carnegie Hall and Miami's New World Music Center in July 2018.

In April 2018, Prieto was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music by Loyola University New Orleans.
