Jaap van Zweden to Appear with Emanuel Ax as Soloist

Music Director Jaap van Zweden will conduct the New York Philharmonic in Mozart's Symphonies Nos. 1 and 41, Jupiter, and two piano works with Emanuel Ax as soloist, Haydn's Piano Concerto in D major, Hob.XVIII: 11, and Stravinsky's Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra, Wednesday, January 30, 2019, at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, January 31 at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, February 1 at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, February 2 at 8:00 p.m.

Emanuel Ax was named an Honorary Member of the Philharmonic-Symphony Society of New York in recognition of his 100th performance with the Orchestra, in April 2011. He served as the Philharmonic's Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence for the 2012-13 season. In his upcoming program, Mr. Ax will juxtapose a work from the Classical era, exemplified by Haydn, with a work from Stravinsky's neoclassical period.

The program opens with Mozart's first symphony, written at age eight, and closes with his final symphony, written three years before his death, at the age of 35. This will be the third Philharmonic program featuring Mozart conducted by Music Director Jaap van Zweden. When he led Mozart's Sinfonia concertante in 2014, The New York Times praised his "precise, admirable conducting" and "lithe, gracious and stylish interpretation." In 2015 The New York Times wrote that he "found fresh spirit" in Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23.
