In this Livestream episodic series, Pay-Per-HAP investigates the genius behind two avant-gard savants: a preocious Viennese movie star named Hedy Lamarr and an American-German music producer named George Antheil. Together, in 1941, only months before the United States entered the War, following Emperor Hirohito's attack on Pearl Harbor, Hedy & George designed a "secret communication system" that was granted a patent the following year by the United States Inventors' Council. The application would ultimately serve as the foundational principle of Spread Spectrum Technology, which catalyzed secure wireless communications upon which society now depends in every facet of life. Explore how these technologically gifted artists met and conceived an idea that would forever change the world.

Paul Lehrman is a Tufts University professor and George Antheil expert. Amongst his disciplines are: Music, Computer Science, and Mechanical Engineering. Lehrman also heads the Tufts Music Engineering interdisciplinary minor program and supervises all of Tufts' music departments technical needs. A graduate of Lesley Univeristy, Lehrman obtained his Masters Degree via the successful defense of a thesis entitled The Revival of George Antheils 1924 Ballet mcanique. In 2010, Lehrman received a PhD from Tufts Universitys Interdisciplinary Doctoral program. His thesis built upon his prior work, incorporating considerable new research into both the score and the film of Ballet mcanique, entitled The History and Technology of Ballet mcanique. In October 2013, pianist Guy Livingston premiered a concerto-style edition of Ballet mcanique, produced by Lehrman and Livingston, at the Sinuston Fest in Magdeburg, Germany. The rendition has since been performed in Montreal, Canada, Boston, MA, and Providence, RI.
