Surprising that TheaterMania is breaking the news, though.

… there are other directors that do better work than Kenny Leon, Broadway knows that… right?

I'm just here so I don't get fined

A play with Jeremy Strong is doing 500. Denzel alone would easily make them top that, but you add Gyllenhaal and I wouldn't be surprised to see 800+

God, how I wish this was the Sam Gold production. One of the times his outlandish choices really paid off IMO

Those other directors haven't previously directed Denzel to a Tony Award. This industry is built on relationships, and they have a strong one.

1.) This thread title needs to be changed out of respect.

2.) I'll spend everything I have.

3.) Just got out of "The Picture of Dorian Gray" where my phone was BLOWING UP in my pocket - I really thought something was wrong and was freaking me out lol

Yes, I'll pay large amounts of money for this.

I loved that production, but actually thought it was quite straightforward and not at all outlandish. But yea, I’d love to see this pair in that production.

I loved that production as well and was rather surprised it didn't transfer. One of Gold's best productions, imo.

Add me to the chorus of people who loved the Sam Gold production.

This DenzelGyllenhaal pairing is the rare production of a play that could go into a Shubert "musical house" (the Imperial?) and still sell out at sky-high prices because of those two stars.

Literally me reading the news today. I mean Denzel and Kenny just seem so "been there, done that."

In their defense, Denzel and Kenny are at their best when working together. Fences and Raisin were both top-notch. I didn't find Denzel as impactful when he worked with George C Wolfe on Iceman

Definitely one of his best, but more pointedly, his best revival.  I feel his original production of new material land so much better than his revivals, Othello was his rare hit revival.

Has Denzel ever done Shakespeare before?   How about Jake?

Denzel did Richard III at some rinky dink little theatre somewhere...I think it's called the Delacorte or something.

He also played Brutus in Julius Caesar back in 2005.

He was in Julius Caesar on Broadway and was recently nominated for an Oscar for the film version of Macbeth.

Denzel plays it pretty safe with directors. He seems to like working with the same people he trusts time and time again (Antoine Fuqua, Spike Lee, Ridley Scott, the late Tony Scott & Jonathan Demme, etc), and has had a consistent film-producing partner for years (Todd Black). It was an exciting surprise when he decided to work with a Coen brother on the Macbeth film, but in that case he had a producer who he trusted enormously, Scott Rudin.

There's a decent chance he doesn't sign onto a version of Othello directed by someone more avant-garde like Ivo Van Hove or Sam Gold or Rebecca Frecknall, unless he feels really comfortable with them.

That's would I'd like to know with Gyllenhaal in particular.
