This will be a pretty good house for them, comparatively. I enjoyed this play, but I admit I'm surprised they're moving to Broadway. What do they expect the commercial appeal to be? I'm guessing most of the people who wanted to see it have already seen it Off-Broadway. Just my 2 cents, but I'm happy for them anyway!

It'll be a tough sell, certainly, but is obviously being staged as a prestige piece with a good shot at awards. It obviously already has unanimous raves on its side.

Poor Helen Hayes.

First, the beautiful theatre bearing her name is torn down. Then the second theatre named for her is sold, with her name possibly to be replaced. And now this putrid piece of odium is set to befoul the theatre honoring her memory.

Just when you think it couldn't get any worse, it does. I pity the poor audiences who will be subjected to this stinker.

I will most likely not have the opportunity to catch it before it closes Off-Broadway in January, so I'm thankful for the opportunity to see it when it moves to the Hayes. I agree it will be a tough sell, but I hope it does well. Kudos to Roundabout for taking a chance on the piece and bringing it to Broadway.

Well, not Roundabout so much as Scott Rudin.

"I agree it will be a tough sell,"

Why? The stinker received raves, so it has to be great, right? Why wouldn't audiences flock to see something great?

Tough sell. That's what we're always told about shows that the critics tell us are wonderful, like this item, Hand to God, Fun Home (2/3 potential gross last week). So why aren't audiences flocking? Could it be because these shows are anything but wonderful?

Naah, that can't be it.

Hopefully the "Eight" in "After Eight" stands for Eight(y) years old because I can't wait for this disgusting poster to drop dead so that this c.unt won't pollute the boards anymore

The thing is, besides being an utter toad of a human being, Riedel usually has the least knowledge of the topic in the room. He doesn't usually understand the content or approach of a show, and is always completely and unfailingly socially ignorant, which makes it really infuriating when Susan can't get a word in edgewise. A definitive mansplainer; it's always painful when he has female guests. I watch the show sporadically when I really want to see a guest, because it's the only theatre talkshow we have, but it would be so much better without this hateful clown in a dadcoat. caught the play last night and thought it was exceptional - couldn't be happier that a terrific humorous and heart breaking new piece of theater is being brought to Broadway.

Scott Rudin has the most exceptional taste for Theater (as well as Film) - kudos to him for bringing this to Broadway.

AfterEight was telling Helen Hayes to get off his lawn when she was a girl.

I went during previews Off-Broadway and loved it, and I hope to go back during the Broadway run since I imagine the cast will be even better than they were in previews.

I am a little surprised they'd move straight to Brodway in the dead of winter rather than wait for the spring. Still, if they make it, it should have a good shot for Best Play. As of right now, the only this I could see being competition is Eclipsed.

King Charles III is a critical and financial success, as well.

I assume transferring The Humans isn't about making money but bringing it to a wider audience. Even though Rudin is producing the transfer, I assume Roundabout will be involved just like where with You Can't Take It With You which they were the associate producer.

Given Stephen Karam's success with Sons of the Prophet, The Humans and Speech and Debate at Roundabout, you wonder why they won't put his plays in one of their main Broadway theatres like The American Airlines.

Kad, I forgot about King Charles III! It certainly would also deserve the award, but in June it will have been closed for several months, so it might be a little forgotten despite the excellent reviews.

I would be SHOCKED if The Humans wins over Charles. Nothing against Humans; as I said I enjoyed it, but in my book, it's not even in the same league as Charles

Haven't seen the NYC production but the one here in Chicago earlier this year was amazing.  I hope its run at the Helen Hayes theatre is extremely successful--a play this good deserves all the exposure it can get.

I rather liked it, but there's no explosive dramatics. It's pretty much the equivalent of an indie drama. It's no big, epic, August, or a crazy zany comedy with a gimmick like Hand to God. It's quiet, but powerful, and interesting.

And Jane deserves a Tony for this!

Also,

Roundabout wouldn't put this on as it's not a "revival" of any sort. It doesn't go with their artistic message. Although they did that new musical with Donna Murphy awhile back that was awful. So who knows.

Roundabout isn't involved in the transfer at all.

Roundabout occasionally put on new work in their Broadway houses usually transfers like The 39 Steps, A Naked Girl on the Appian Way, Brief Encounter etc

I love how AfterEight goes back and edits in other recent touchstones so he can achieve maximum outrage from fans of good new work.  It's fun.

Also, AfterE, nobody but nobody believes you actually see the things you gripe about.  Anybody who reads the boilerplates put out by the PR departments could fake their way through the stances you take.

You ain't fooling' nobody, old queen.

Is this an open ended run? Can't seem to find a closing date. I had trouble imagining this will have the same level of success as Curious Incident or War Horse

I saw it this week.  A really good play.  Not sure if it would have been my choice for a broadway transfer.  But I am really glad I saw it.  I had a issue with the casting of the sisters.  Both actresses were wonderful.  But they did not look like sisters to me.  The set reminded me of my first NYC apartment.  I think the last time I was in this theater it was called something else.  Maybe 30 years ago.
