Well, this is a surprise... and with quite a good cast.

I guess the "More casting to be announced soon" for LOVE LETTERS isn't going to happen.

Did anyone see the "sold-out premiere at New Jersey's George Street Playhouse"?

Well, I don't remember it as sold out. I thought the performances -- especially that of Lisa Howard -- outshone the dated, somewhat cliche-ridden material. I did like the twist that emerged, however. But the songs were pretty much forgettable. Even with that cast, most of whom were at George Street, I'll be surprised if this show is a hit.

Please keep in mind that was back in 2011, I'm sure they're currently working on the material right now.

Even with Tyne and Harriet, this show was a mess. Book, songs, direction all very amateurish. It was one long cliche, from beginning to end. Hard to imagine that a show like this could ever succeed on Broadway, regardless of the cast. Yes, the audiences kvelled over it, but trust me, the New York critics would skewer it. Passable as suburban theatre, but no sign that this could ever make it in New York New York.

I can't wait for this one, my good friend Steve is in the cast. Perhaps they have improved on the material since 2011?

I saw it at George Street. It was rather disjointed and despite an amazingly talented cast, I merely thought it was mildly "cute". I do remember remarking "this is perfect mid-West dinner theatre fare. But on the other hand not all my friends agreed. Some thought it was just wonderful -- well, probably because of the gay angle.

I can't say that I remember a single song, but at the time I did enjoy some of them.

This is as close to a vanity production as Broadway gets. The cast was the only redeeming thing about the George Street productions and it wasn't even their performances it was just the fact that they gave us something to look at. It was also very dated subject matter that has aged even more since the NJ premiere. I had to be reminded it was it was a musical because the music was that forgettable. I also remember the set promised a farce of slamming doors but the material didn't deliver.

I'm thinking they are thinking the worse case scenario is it gets nominated for awards giving it a chance to join the regional, Sumer stock and amateur repertoire .

I agree with Up. When I saw this three years ago I thought it was already dated material but cute. Reminded me of watching a rerun of Three's Company. Same tired laugh lines and a gentleness that can be cloying after 30 minutes. At least Three's Company on tv is free. I would not want to pay $89 to sit through this again. This felt like a really well done NYMF show with an unlimited set budget and the director's famous friends stopped by to do a favor.

Thanks for the link Jordan! I don't know the show at all, looking forward to seeing something with a new score come to Broadway. Perhaps with some time and hard work it will blossom.
