So they just announced they are working on a stage adaptation of Matthew Warchus new film PRIDE.

So tying that into this message board I just want to say I saw it last night and it was an INCREDIBLE movie. One of the best of the year. I highly encourage anyone in NY and LA to see it on September 26th so it can get a larger release, unfortunately its being distributed in the US by CBS Films who has a notoriously bad track record and this film is pretty much getting buried by them (little advertising, "platform release"). Just saying it has a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 8.0 on IMDB right now. Please support this film, it absolutely deserves a place in the awards season conversation and Bill Nighy, Dominic West, and Imelda Staunton are giving fantastic performances!

I saw PRIDE at the Toronto film festival (surprising number of older people in the audience) and found it a bit long and predictable (to anyone who seen any gay-themed film before), but does leave you with an upbeat feeling at the end (it’s based on true events and some of the characters are based on real people). It’s been compared to Billy Elliot and The Full Monty as a feel-good Britcom, and I would agree – although I don’t think it’s as good as those two. I could see a stage version working if they cut down some of the minor characters and boosted the drama of the major characters. Good performances from both young and older actors, and some good 80s dance music.

LightsOut, please explain how platforming a movie means burying it. I find it hard to believe that a releasing company which uses as screening at the Ziegfeld theater to build awareness intends to do nothing to get audiences for a film it picked up. It's not as if they're disappointed in how it turned out.

they are releasing it in 4 theaters its opening weekend, and yes they used the Ziegfeld, but it was an actors fund screening that they ended up giving away HUNDREDS of free tickets to, not sure if your in nyc but have you seen a single tv ad or billboard for it?

Also never a good sign when the director of the film after the screening is imploring people to tell there friends . Updated On: 9/16/14 at 11:29 PM

Most advanced screenings that aren't piggy-backing on a film in release are free. And there's little awareness because it's a tiny film from the UK with no bankable stars and no shot at awards recognition. The company is doing what it can by building awareness with a core group of likely supporters. And I've almost always heard the director ask the audience to spread the word. That's what screenings like this are for.

The company flew over the director, actors, and some of the real people from the source story, which is proof they're not just trying to commit movie murder. Most movies like this open in a few theaters, wait for the reviews to draw audiences, and if they do, the company then puts money into the expansion. Have their been a lot of TV spots and billboards for Birdman which opens right after this and is widely expected to get major Oscar nominations?

^ no because that opens October 17th a good month away, you will see plenty for that as Fox Searchlight has a WAY bigger P&A budget then CBS Films, look this isn't a negative post in any way the bottom line I'm trying to get across is GO SEE THIS MOVIE, ITS WONDERFUL and deserves to be supported.

If I see one more plucky working class British community learn to respect and embrace the differences between themselves, discover their own inner beauty, and therein find their own voice — I just might puke.

No bankable stars. Imelda Staunton & Bill Nighy are in it, there are bankable stars.

I wouldn't really call Imelda Staunton and Bill Nighy bankable stars, at least not here. They're recognizable to frequent moviegoers by face, but not by name to most people.

And the original post says it's playing in limited release here starting September 26th.

I saw a screening tonight. I didn't know this story until now and as a gay man, I am so grateful they decided to tell it.

This was one of the most powerful, moving and affecting films I've seen in a long time. The audience was cheering at the end -- cheering AND sobbing.

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. I really hope the stage plans come to fruition! In the meantime, I will happily go and pay to see the film again when it's officially released.

I've seen the trailer up on LOVE IS STRANGE and clearly CBS Films is promoting it if they're doing Word Of Mouth screenings.

And word of mouth is quite strong

I didn't know that Matthew Warchus directed it and now I do because of this thread

I think Warchus is a genius - going to see this opening weekend

Hmmm. Sounds kinda "Kinky Boots meets Billy Elliott". And I mean that it a good way.

Just got home from the INCREDIBLE movie. Yes, it is kinnda like Billy Elliot meets Kinky Boots, but it is still a heart warming piece of cinema.

Was nominated this morning for Best Musical or Comedy Golden Globe, very well deserved shame CBS really didn't push it harder in the states, hopefully more folks will seeks out this gem of a film.
