The Canadian-Brussels choreographer Ula Sickle created two solos for and with young dancers from Kinshasa, whom she met in the course of the KVS’ Congo project. She got to know Dinozord as a dancer in performances by Faustin Linyekula, and met Jolie Ngemi at the Connexion Kin arts festival. In Solid Gold, Dinozord traces the roots of hip hop, which run from traditional African dance to Broadway entertainment and MTV. Jolie is a short, powerful solo inspired by popular Congolese dances seen in music clips and local nightclubs. The musician Yann Leguay incorporates the dancers’ voices, footsteps and breathing into a live soundtrack.
