The CHS Opening Knights Proudly Present Disney's NEWSIES

Century High School's (CHS) award-winning Opening Knights Drama Club proudly presents the Carroll County premier of Disney's Newsies, the Broadway musical, to be performed on April 4, 5, 6, 12 and 13 at 7 pm and April 6 & 13 at 2 pm.

Based on the 1992 motion picture and inspired by a true story, Newsies features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a script by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein (Kinky Boots). Featuring the now classic songs "Carrying the Banner," "Seize the Day," and "Santa Fe," Newsies is packed with non-stop thrills and a timeless message, perfect for the whole family and every audience.

Set in New York City in 1899, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenage "newsies." When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys' expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what's right, reminding all that now is the time to seize the day!

Directors Lucas and Caitlyn Hewitt are very excited to bring Newsies to the stage at CHS to showcase the amazing and talented Opening Knights' Drama Club actors. Mr. Hewitt shared, "We are thrilled to be able to be the first CCPS high school to put on Disney's Newsies! This show is perfect for today's teenagers as it all about coming together in unity to support one another and be a part of something bigger than yourself."

The cast has engaged in training on the time period, practiced their New York accents and made personalized connections from events in the story to events in today's world. In total, almost 90 students are involved in the show. They are contributing to all aspects of the production, including costuming, lights, sound and set building. And just like in the show, together the students are creating something amazing.

Junior Sophy Leiva, who plays a nun and newsie says, "Newsies is probably one of the hardest shows I've ever been in, but all the hard work pays off when I get to look back at how much I, and my other cast mates, have progressed. It's honestly such a blessing to be a part of this show, and I'm super excited for opening night!" Freshman Isabell Sanchez who plays a newsie and passerby, says, "Newsies is an exhilarating show with lots of energy, great songs, and amazing dances!" It is sure to delight audiences of all ages!

Evening performances will take place in the Century High School auditorium on April 4, 5, 6, 12 and 13 at 7 pm. Matinees will take place at 2 pm on April 6 and 13.
