The online dance competition INDONESIA MENARI VIRTUAL 2021 held its final round and crowned the winners on Sunday, October 10th, 2021.

INDONESIA MENUJU BROADWAY 2021 offers a nearly year-long Online & Offline Musical Theater Conservatory, in which 100 select students (aged 15-30) will study musical theater in a mix of online and offline classes; the syllabus is said to be adapted from the first year curriculum of American conservatories.

Jakarta-based musical community JAKSICAL was previously known for their community gatherings and annual concerts, but on July 3rd they ventured to a new territory: performing arts classes. They started big, collaborating with New York-based BROADWAYPLUS to bring ANASTASIA’s Christy Altomare as the inaugural host for the class.

The series will stream for free starting on July 1st on Indonesia Kaya’s YouTube channel. If the first episode is any indication, NURBAYA will be an enjoyable musical work with unprecedented scale and accessibility.

The year 2021 is here, bringing a new, though cautious, hope after the arduous 2020 which saw a global pandemic putting a stop to most performing arts activities. We caught up with several Indonesian musical communities and companies as they looked back at the previous year and shared their plans for 2021.

As the year comes to a close, ARTSWARA FOUNDATION and BAKTI BUDAYA DJARUM FOUNDATION offered a new musical short film to watch during the holidays. LENTERA DI TEPIAN is a very classic romance story with a Indo-Malay background. Though the end result is adequately entertaining, the overly familiar trappings offer little in the way of excitement.

Following up their #MusikalDiRumahAja web musical series, the cultural portal Indonesia Kaya is holding an audition campaign called MENCARI SITI. The audition looks for musical actors and actresses to feature in a new web musical going live next year.

As the ongoing pandemic continues to close curtains and dim lights in theaters across the world, World’s Performing Arts Group, an multinational network of performing artists, held a webinar disseminating issues that arose from the situation.

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, as many performing arts communities and companies close their curtains for the time being, a new one emerges: ASKARA.

Musical community Jaksicala??s annual birthday concert is back - this time in virtual space, due to the ongoing pandemic. JOURNEY THROUGH TIME 4 REWIND showcases showtunes from Jaksicala??s previous three concerts, sung by both returning and new performers.

Video platform Vidio is introducing their newest original series, Serigala Terakhir (lit. The Last Wolf). Based on a 2009 movie of the same title, this star-studded, action-packed crime thriller will debut on September 25th and run for 6 episodes.

The sixth and final offering from #MusikalDiRumahAja closes the 6-episode web series on a high note. The Sundanese folktale of Lutung Kasarung was a joy to watch from start to finish, owing to the immaculate cinematography and fun theatricality.

The penultimate episode of #MusikalDiRumahAja, Bawang Merah Bawang Putih, has been broadcast. With a quirky and distinctive art director, the episode is visually interesting and has an intriguing narrative take, although it might not appeal to everyone.

Sangkuriang, the fourth episode of web musical series #MusikalDiRumahAja had arrived. The Tanta Ginting-led episode had exemplary cinematography and vocal prowess, yet the storytelling did not flow as beautifully and effortlessly as the leadsa?? vocals.

As part of the #NontonTeaterDirumahAja program by Bakti Budaya Djarum Foundation, an original cinema play, Rumah Kenangan, is to make its debut on August 15th. The COVID-19-inspired drama is produced in collaboration with Titimangsa Foundation and will boast big name stars.

#MusikalDiRumahAjaa??s third and latest entry, Rara J, is the first to transplant the source folktale into a current-day setting. However, the adaptation is not merely skin-deep, as the episodea??s presentation is as snazzy as its internet-savvy characters, resulting in a fun and accessible watch.

The second episode of #MusikalDiRumahAja web musical series, Timun Mas, brought the childrena??s tale into a new, surreal realm. It puts its meticulously stylistic presentation up and front, at the cost of muddling its substance behind a veneer of colors and light.
