The relationship between the young Don Karlos and his father King Philipp II of Spain is tense. After the death of his first wife, Philipp had married Elizabeth de Valois, although she was already engaged to Karlos. When Karlos tells her about his infinite love during a meeting arranged by his best friend, the Marquis of Posa, he is dismissed by Elizabeth. He decides to follow the advice of Posa, who has returned from Flanders in order to promote the Flemish struggle for freedom. But Philipp does not trust his son any more and sends in his stead the militant Duke of Alba to Flanders in order to take command of the troops. Posa tries to lead the idea of freedom to victory with an elaborate plot. But instead of the victory he seeks, he and Karlos have to pay with their lives. Schiller describes a time that precedes social change. But the change fails due to both the self-preservation strategies of the powerful, as well as the inadequacy of those who want to implement new ideas with old methods.
Don Karlos shows like none other of Schiller's dramas his personal attitude towards the duties of the state and the dignity of human freedom.
The Austrian director George Schmiedleitner has already directed Mary Stuart, Faust, The Maid of Orleans and finally Peer Gynt at the National Theatre.
