Review: PICTURES: SONGS FROM MOVIE MUSICALS at Chapel Off Chapel

Review by Josh Martin
Watch out Barbra Streisand and Liza Minnelli, the movie musical has a new star...Kerrie Anne Greenland!

Most well known for her Helpmann Award winning performance of Eponine in Cameron Mackinstosh's latest revival of Les Miserables, this time Greenland invites her audience into the intimate Loft Theatre at Chapel off Chapel for her latest cabaret, Pictures: Songs from Movie Musicals.

This cabaret jam packs into an hour a fantastic plethora of well know songs from movie musicals, stretching from the first song that defined the era, Blue Skies, from The Jazz Singer in 1927, through to A Million Dreams from The Greatest Showman On Earth.

The musical nerd inside of me was jumping for joy throughout the entire performance as Greenland demonstrated her incredible vocal talents. The collection of songs compiled by herself and music director Joshua James Webb was a pleasure to listen to, with each song showcasing a new side to Greenland's stunning voice and leaving the audience in awe of her incredible vocal abilities.

The unscripted banter between the singer and her music director made for some hilarious moments throughout the evening, especially when her cello player jumped into the mix as well. These improvised moments then transitioned into monologues were Greenland shared snapshots of her childhood, drama school and professional theatre experiences. She allowed us to discover the women behind the voice and created some poignant moments, which were complimented by beautiful showtunes.
Tanya Mitford's direction effortlessly weaves all the different aspects of the show together and allows Greenland to focus on doing what she does best - wowing audiences.
The only let down is that there was only one performance of this stunning cabaret, which I was lucky enough to see on 2nd June. Hopefully more performances are planned, so stay tuned by keeping an eye out on www.kerrieannegreenland.com.
